GTSC Women Sailing Events
The following is the GTSC women program for Fall 2005. The schedule is the
bottom of the page
-------------- Basic Level Instruction -------------
Women Helmsman Regatta:
The AISC Women Helmsman regatta will be held August 20th. This is a fun event
where ladies from all different clubs on the lake get together to race. Though
these ladies are competitive, they are first & foremost out there to encourage
each other! Susie’s volunteered to get us out there on the J24 & there will be
open spots for crew. Email her to get on the boat! (
gte377x@prism.gatech.edu )
Women’s Sailing Day September 17th:
The Women’s Sailing Day is put together with combined effort from GTSC and the
Women’s Resource Center as part of the “Women in the Wilderness” ORGT program.
This is a day where even very inexperienced women get to try out sailing. It’s a
very positive environment & even includes lunch! To sign up to participate in
this event, you need to go through the women’s resource center. Club qualified
skippers (women and men) will also be needed to volunteer & should contact Susie (
gte377x@prism.gatech.edu )
to let her know she can count on you.
Women’s 420 Instruction:
After the Women’s Sailing day, we will be offering two more events that will get
women out in the club’s 420s for instruction. The dates are September 25th and
October 9th (both Sundays). These instruction days are open to all women in the
club who have paid their membership dues! Instruction will be targeted to the
level of women who sign up for this event. We can cover any range of skills from
simple boat handling techniques to advanced concepts like spinnaker work. It all
depends on what you want to get out of it. Email Benton (
Benton@gtsailing.org )
to sign up now. Please send your name, email, level of experience, and what you
would like to learn. The more info we have, the better we can cater to YOU!
--------------- SAISA Women’s Champs ---------------
For any undergrad women interested in racing, there is a great SAISA regatta
October 1st and 2nd that will be held down in St. Pete strictly for women
sailors. The district benefits greatly from getting bodies on the start line for
this event & all schools are very encouraging to get less experienced women out.
Saturday they race 420s at USF and Sunday they race Laser radials at Eckerd
College. Our team is welcome to participate in either or both events. Contact
your race team captain, Jack ( gtg743t@prism.gatech.edu ),
to let him know you are interested in doing this. You WILL be hearing more about
this event.
-------------- Advanced Level: -------------
We will be offering two Laser rigging & racing clinics targeted at women who are
already skipper qualified & want to get better. We’ve held a clinic like this
before, but this time we are tacking it onto some of the Laser fleet races at
LLSC. Early in the day will have a rigging demo & racing discussion. Following
that, we will head out for fleet races. Race dates are August 28th (2pm) and
September 11th (3pm). Benton will be on the water and can give you some coaching
during or between races. We are limited by the number of lasers we can rig, so
let Benton know ASAP if you are interested (
Benton@gtsailing.org ).
