Racing

The Georgia Tech Sailing Club gets to do a lot of racing- both on Lake Lanier & elsewhere!

Intercollegiate Racing: Click here to go to the GTSC Race Team page
We compete in intercollegiate regattas through the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA), including our regular points regattas (in double-hand dinghies), women’s Championships (in single-hand &/or double-hand dinghies), and even Sloop Champs (in Keel boats). Check out the Gallery for pictures from a few SAISA regattas! You must be an undergraduate student to compete in these regattas, but do not need to have any experience- we are always looking for crew. WE are also always on the lookout for experienced sailors to skipper for us, so let me know if you are interested in racing with us! SAISA regattas usually take us to places like University of South Florida (St. Pete FL), University of Florida (Gainesville, FL), Eckerd College (ST. Pete, FL), Jacksonville University (Jacksonville, FL), Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL), and the College of Charleston (Charleston, SC). For these regattas, we usually meet after class on Friday, then carpool down to the regatta (gas is paid for by the club). WE stay there either with friends, the local college or at a hotel & get up and sail on Saturday. Sometimes we drive back if the regatta is short & get home last Saturday night. Other times we may head back to Tech on Sunday morning. These trips are a lot of fun & you get to make a lot of good friends.

Other Out-of–Town Racing: 2006 Laser Regatta Schedule
Several members in our club compete in our boats or in their own boats at many regattas in the south east and elsewhere. They are usually on the lookout for crew for themselves or their competitors and are always in search of other skippers to race against. Many of these regattas include regattas C15s (our double-hand dinghies), J24s (our keelboats), Lasers (our single-hand dinghies), Hobies (our Catamarans) & Windsurfers. Our members regularly compete in southeastern district regattas in each or these fleets. If you are interested in racing in some of these regattas, let me know & I can try to point you in the right direction of who you need to talk to! Out of town regattas are very fun because you get experience sailing in different places & in different conditions.

Racing on Lake Lanier:
The Georgia Tech Sailing club competes all the time all on Lake Lanier. We often race in Dinghy fleet racing (such as Laser frostbiting & 420 fleet races) along with keel boat racing series, like the J24 fleet races. We compete in the Atlanta Inland Sailing Club (AISC)’s Wednesday night races and Friday night series as well. Basically for that we all meet on Campus & carpool up to the lake after class and take our keelboats out. Also, we race in annual regattas on the Lake such as the AISC Dogwood Regatta (in keelboats), the LLSC Reggae Regatta, Commodore’s cup, the BFSC Women’s Keel Regatta and the list goes on and on!!

Interclub Competition:
We also compete against each other in the club at our 3 interclub events; the Spring Fling, Summer Bummer, and Frigid digit. At these races, we try to get as many of our own boats & club members out on the lake to battle for bragging rights until the next race! These regattas are usually laid back & a lot of fun. They are great opportunities to get inexperienced racers out on the course for the first time!

As you can see, GTSC does a lot of racing and with people of all levels of experience. So come join us!!! See you on the water! For more information about racing in the club, please contact the Race Team Captain
